Keep reading below for the whole story of this ministry that affects so many lives ...
Mission Carlsbad is a week-long mission where students and adults work locally to repair homes, restore hope, and show compassion to local residents.Begun in 2003, Mission Carlsbad replaced a traveling mission trip as the church saw a need locally and sought to make a difference in the community. Students and adults spend a week working together to accomplish various projects ranging from house painting to bathroom remodeling to roof replacement and repair. Mission Carlsbad is led and sponsored by FUMC; however, several local churches send youth to participate. The majority of the work is performed by students, with adults acting as guides to teach skills.

The students and adult leaders dedicate a week of their summer to giving back to Carlsbad. The students often forego other activities while many of the adults take vacation time from their jobs to work the mission. In addition to giving their time, there is a fee associated with working the mission with each participant paying to cover their own food and lodging costs for the week. The Mission Carlsbad group spends a week together at a remote location where they sleep, eat morning meals, and worship nightly. Though most participants are from the surrounding area, it is important to bring the group back together in the evenings. This is the time where stories are shared and overwhelming compassion is recognized as the week unfolds.

After hours activities and worship during Mission Carlsbad
In a given year, as many as 20 projects are completed during Mission Carlsbad week. These range from projects requiring 3-4 workers and two days work to large-scale operations requiring several skilled adult workers, 8-10 youth helpers and five days to complete. Since the inception of Mission Carlsbad, over 100 families have been impacted. Their homes are now safer, more efficient, and more attractive due to the work provided by the students and team leaders. Not only are their immediate needs being satisfied through the work, but their emotional state has been brightened due to the changes made. Quality of life is being restored as pride replaces sorrow or shame due to inadequate living conditions. Homeowners are now living in functioning homes that they are proud of, which lifts their spirits and brightens the community.

Youth and adults helping to repair homes and restore lives.
In addition to impacting the lives of the residents, the workers of Mission Carlsbad are also impacted. Through their service, workers accept situations, show compassion, and take on a humble servant role. This week changes the lives of all involved.
